iConnectivity™ is a Calgary-based company with a patent pending technology designed to bridge the gap between older electronic equipment and newer devices like portable handhelds, smartphones, and tablets. Although the platform technology can be applied to many verticals, the company is currently focused on the music industry with its first product – iConnectMIDI. In its current design, iConnectMIDI connects iOS devices, like the iPad and iPhone, to digital music instruments, like synthesizers, enabling both classic and modern connectors (traditional DIN vs. USB). iConnectivity™ has a product roadmap that will enable musicians, both recreational and professional, to compose and record music, add special effects, control volumes, and collaborate live with other musicians while on the road, in the studio, or from their basement.

nFluids Inc.

Innovate Calgary’s most current Company Creation project is a novel oil field drilling technology from the University of Calgary. nFluids Inc. is based on a patented invention from researchers in the Chemical & Petroleum Engineering Department. The technology has impressive lab results that demonstrate the ability to reduce drilling fluid loss by 50% to 80% (as per API test standards).
Drilling fluid is an important part of an oil and gas drilling operation. It is used to cool the drill bit, remove cuttings, lubricate the wellbore and provide hydrostatic pressure to balance out the down-hole pressure from the reservoir (to help avoid a blow-out). The loss of drilling fluid into the cracks and pores of the geological formations is not only a safety risk but can also be very costly and an environmental blemish. nFluids Inc. is developing a product that has the potential to dramatically reduce the loss of fluid while providing a more efficient, environmentally friendly, cost effective and safer drilling operation. The group is hoping to have a product available by the end of 2012.
Innovate Calgary has been engaged with the researchers since the fall of 2011 and are working towards additional lab tests with core samples, live field tests down an actual well, and full commercialization of the technology.
